Tap an NFC card on a Raspberry Pi and the story plays on the Sonos. No cloud, no subscription.

A physical interface for a child who can’t read yet: a stack of cards, and a spot to tap them. Card goes on the reader, story comes out of the Sonos.
A PN532 reader wired over I2C to a Raspberry Pi handles the tapping. A small local web interface handles everything else — uploading MP3s, pairing a card to a story, discovering speakers on the network. The card-to-story mapping is stored locally, and the whole thing stays on the LAN.
The commercial versions of this cost money every month and stop working when a server goes away. This one is a Pi, a ten-euro reader and a docker compose up, and the only thing it depends on is the house it lives in.
